Watercolour realist

Watercolour realist Bonnie Wood was born in Picton, Ontario. Her great-grandfather, grandfather and father were all artists in differing mediums so she believes it is a God given artistic talent that has been handed down to her and too precious to waste.

Bonnie has been drawing all her life, first in graphite then to pen and ink and pointillism. The opportunity was given to her to try watercolours later in life and there has been no looking back!

The last few years she has been experimenting with watercolours, trying to find her style and has fallen in love with this beautiful, sometimes difficult, but wonderfully fasinating medium. Her subjects are always animals, wildlife and florals. Because she is a realist each painting can take months to finish to her satisfaction so only a few paintings are finished a year. Though she is a self taught artist who has been learning the craft through books and video's she feels she is on the right path to fulfilling her dream of being a good wildlife painter.

Artist's Statement

I am a realist watercolourist wanting to capture a moment, movement or mood in this wonderful world of Nature. I have been enthralled by wildlife and flowers as far back as I can remember. I am driven to try to capture the look in an animals eyes, the lay of the fur or feathers, the moods they portray. I love the detail on a flowers petals, stamen and leaves, the way light plays on them and through them.

I like the softly built up layers you can achieve or the bold colouring you can get with watercolours and sometimes how it can take you on an accidental path you hadn't planned on.

I want observers to feel the painting they are viewing, to feel the soft fur or eye, or wrinkly skin, the silkiness of a flower petal, the power or gentleness in the mood of the animal. I want them to smile when they look at my paintings because they have enjoyed looking at it.
