Drawings and Paintings

I work in charcoal, pastel, watercolour and oils, though recent work is primarily in charcoal and pastel. Following graduation from university in 1971 I spent several years in Japan, where I studied calligraphy, then returned to Canada to attend the Ontario College of Art in Toronto. I eventually made a career teaching high school art, but on retirement have been able to bring my focus back to making art. The drawings and paintings shown here and on my website have, with few exceptions, been produced in 2010 and 2011.

Anyone interested in figure drawing is invited to join the drawing group that meets at my studio each Monday at 3:00 p.m.; we draw until 6:00 p.m. Instruction is available if desired.

Artist's Statement

Visual art is driven, I think, by its primary elements and principles. More important than our interest in this or that subject matter is our delight in how we use the basic vocabulary of design: colour, line, shape, etc. Personally I get a lot of pleasure from the way line and other elements of design interact to produce an image, and from the tension between medium and design elements on the one hand, and image on the other.
